Please post any questions/comments on the forum.

If you have a question about a horses color, we will need the following information:

  • A clear, as true to life as possible, photo of the horse in question. Several different photos showing different parts of the horse, (especially the head and legs) and different angles are very much appreciated. We like a profile or conformation shot of the horse from each side, a head shot, from side or front (close enough to show eye detail), a leg shot (close enough to show lower leg & hoof color), a shot from the rear (to show a dorsal stripe or countershading), or a shot from above (if possible). The horse should be in it's natural length coat and the best season to determine true color is late spring early summer.
  • Photos of the sire and dam. We prefer to have photos instead of registry records because horses are frequently registered the wrong color. If photos are not available registry records are better than nothing.
  • Breed and age of the horse.
  • All photos submitted should be larger in size (no less than 200 pixels wide) and in .bmp, .tiff, .png, .eps, .jpg or .gif format. Don't worry about optimizing them.

  • If you send a photo that is dark or too small to see the horse clearly we will probably not be able to give you much help on determining the color of your horse.
If you would like to send us a photo to use on this site as an example of a certain color or marking please post your information on the forum. Please include your Name/Farm name and URL if you have one. Below are a few suggestions for submitting photos.

  • Send the photo as an email attachment (.jpg or .gif is preferred) or
  • Send us the URL of your web site where we can download the photo
  • You can also upload photos to one of our photo albums.
  • Include with the photo the background color of the horse (sire, dam, etc.) if known. Photos of the same horse at different ages is encouraged.
  • Please also include the breed of the horse if it is known
  • Please make sure the color of the horse in the photo is as true to life as possible
  • Please don't worry about optimizing the photos, we will take care of that if necessary, as many photos get severely distorted due to improper optimization
  • Submit several photos of the same horse from different angles if possible

Please do not send photos that are:

  • distorted
  • blurry
  • have dark shadows or are very dark
  • very small (minimum. 200 pixels tall or wide) we like detail
Please note certain things (if not shown in photos) such as:
  • breed - it is very important that you note the breed, even if it is a crossbred
  • parent's colors - it's helpful to have the parents colors listed
  • does the horse have a dorsal stripe?
  • does the horse have markings related to the dun gene (zebra marks on legs, cobwebbing on face, shoulder stripe/shadow)?
  • eye color
  • is the mane and/or tail sunburned in the photo?
  • hoof color/presence of hoof stripes
  • anything else you think may be important
